THE MIDSUMMER DREAM SCHOOL

 

An International Summer School for University Students

 

7 - 20 August 2011 in Aarhus and Holstebro, Denmark

 

Organised by

CTLS - Centre for Theatre Laboratory Studies (DEPARTMENT OF DRAMATURGY at Aarhus University and ODIN TEATRET)

 

The Midsummer Dream School is a training and research environment aimed at students, professional practitioners and critics interested in thinking and working artistically through performative devices and methodological reflections.

 

The Midsummer Dream School 2011 will concentrate on the relationship between performance space and spectator participation. The participants will have the opportunity to do practical and theoretical work in different types of space and venue as a framework for sound, images, personal actions and texts, analyzing the 'interference' of theatre on the spectator.

 

In 2011 the collaborators will be: Dramaturg MIRIAM FRANDSEN (Department for Further Education at the National Theatre School in Copenhagen, Denmark), theatre professors and critics KNUT OVE ARNTZEN (Department of Theatre Science, University of Bergen, Norway) and NIKOLAI PESOCHINSKY (Theatre Academy, St. Petersburg, Russia) as well as the actors/dancers ROBERTA CARRERI, JAN FERSLEV, KAI BREDHOLT and AUGUSTO OMOLÚ together with director EUGENIO BARBA (Odin Teatret, Holstebro, Denmark).

 

The Midsummer Dream School will be in two parts.The first part will take place from 7 to 14 August 2011 at the Department of Dramaturgy at Aarhus University; the second part from 14 to 20 August at Odin Teatret in Holstebro.

Participants at the Midsummer Dream School can attend the Odin Week Festival (Holstebro 22 - 31 August 2011) with a 10 % reduction in the participation fee.

Monday, August 8:

9 am:          Background for The Midsummer Dream School. Introduction to teachers and CTLS (Centre for Theatre Laboratory Studies, an interdisciplinary collaboration between Odin Teatret and Section for Dramaturgy, Department of Aesthetic Studies, Aarhus University) followed bypresentation of the laboratory concept by associate professor, Exe Christoffersen and associate professor, Annelis Kuhlmann

10 am: Workshop directed by Exe Christoffersen on key principles for staging the scenic space and addressing spectators using the dumb show by the troupe of strolling actors in Shakespeare's Hamlet (act III, scene 2) as a point of departure

9 am - 5 pm: Theoretical-practical session (part I) directed by dramaturg, Miriam Frandsen. Devising as composition with Viewpoints. Scenic space and autobiography/talents: body-mind as a living archive. Ways of establishing a relationship to space, performers and spectators

7 pm:  Artist's talk with Stefan Larsson, artistic director of Aarhus Teater. On directing Hamlet in 2011

Wednesday, August 10:

9 am - 5 pm: Continuation of the theoretical-practical session (part II)

7 - 10 pm:    Installation as performance - Visit with commentary to The Nine Spaces (De ni rum) at ARoS, Museum of Contemporary Art, Aarhus (www.aros.dk)

Thursday, August 11:

9 am - 12.45 pm: Workshop on the use of slide projection with Erik Exe Christoffersen.

2 pm:           Excursion by bus to Kronborg Castle at Elsinore

8 pm:            Shakespeare's Globe performs Hamlet in the courtyard of the castle (outdoor performance)

11 pm:          Late return to Aarhus by bus

10-11 am: Conclusion of the theoretical-practical workshop on scenic space

1 pm:            Individual exploration in and on urban para-theatrical spaces / body-mind with visits to Bazar West (ethnic market) and the historical Elsinore Theatre, located in Den Gamle By (The Old Town). Each visit is accompanied by a short lecture
