Entrevista a Eugenio Barba
El Clarin - publicado en Buenos Aires,
Argentina

Honorary Doctorate bestowed on Eugenio Barba by
the National University of the Arts (IUNA) of Buenos Aires,
Argentina
In Praise of Fire by Eugenio
Barba
My speech is like smoke and my body is the burning. I begin
with this sentence in order to prevent the title of my speech - "In
praise of fire" - sounding like a defense for destruction. It is
intended, instead, as a celebration of transformation, and thus of
resistance. The initial image is the title of a play by Deb
Margolin, an American actor and playwright, a pugnacious artist who
often performs alone. Her body is her stage, and "burning" becomes
synonymous with being-in-life.
For centuries the spectators have seen the actors by the
flickering light of candles and gas, in an atmosphere alive with
sudden and volatile shadows, far removed from the docility of our
domesticated electricity. Each of us has at least once experienced
a performance that has
scorched us, reducing to ashes our idea of theatre, the actor's
art and our role as
spectator.

Breve fra Mexico
Iben Nagel-Rasmussen - Brev til Kasia Pastuszak,
Teatr Remus, Polen
der fra arbejdssalen er udsigt over bjergene. Hun stod og ventede
sammen med en hel delegation af kvinder.

i Danmark
Seminaet begyndte i forgårs,
byttehandel.

Theatre as Interference
Eugenio Barba - Four months of experiments on the active
culture of the theatre Theatre is usually considered
an art. But the theatre is also a living milieu of incorporated
know-how and a collection of complex experiences. These can come
into contact and constitute a motive for exchange with other people
and milieus not only through the performance.
What is a theatre without a performance?

2008

Many wishing to help keep the ancient
Gambuh tradition alive
Julia Varley - Warm responses to "Letter from
Bali" (see below 05.10.2008)
I have received many warm responses to the letter
which I sent to theatre groups and friends who are acquainted with
the work which Cristina Wistari Formaggia developed with the
Balinese Desa Batuan Gambuh Ensemble (see the letter below
05.10.2008). Some suggested they would like to help economically.
We all have the wish that this ensemble and school can continue so
as to preserve the ancient Gambuh tradition which risks
disappearing.

Det meget turnerende, internationale Odin Teatret i

News about the Gambuh Desa
Batuan Ensemble
Julia Varley - Letter from
Bali
All of us who knew Cristina Wistari Formaggia were
worried about what would happen with the Gambuh Desa Batuan
Ensemble after her death. Cristina had dedicated herself completely
to this Balinese village troupe of dancers and musicians in order
to save the ancient Gambuh style of dance/drama from extinction.
She took care of the artistic coherence, of finding the masters to
teach the children, of guaranteeing the funds to pay for rehearsals
and performances. On the 2nd of October 2008 I arrived to Bali with
Eugenio Barba to visit the group and see if it was possible to help
them continue their work in some way. I am writing this report on
my way back to Europe the 5th of October to share the
news ...
