Fools' Songs in the Northern Light
Fools’ Songs in the Northern Light is a musical song performance taking starting point in Swedish composer and artist Fritz Sjöström’s music and visual expression (1923-d.1996). The performance is a contemporary search into themes and constellations that were important to Sjöström, developed musically and performed by singer Karin Sjöholm and pianist Elisabeth Klein and directed by Mia Theil Have.
Sjöström came from Jokkasjärvi in Northern Sweden and combines Swedish sound with a sense of French chanson performed with suggestive texts full of images. His art is inspired by symbolism, collage and abstractions. He was very fond of masks and the many sides of an individual. He wrote for a kind of theatre, where costume, physical expression and set design supports the musical expression, and there is some homage to the German cabaret, Brecht and Weill to be found here as well.
Karin Sjöholm has through years visited libraries and music antiquarians to discover many of the hidden gems of Fritz Sjöström, and it is a privilege to bring this untouched work to an audience. In 2018 the team worked in Berlin and did a public sharing at “Experimentarium Berlin” and seeks future opportunities to go to an international audience.
