"The life of a woman" - 3 emotions -

1) Love "Mizukagami" 15 minutes
2) Jealousy "Kanawa" 15 minutes
3) Longing for enlightenment "Yuki" 18 minutes

1) Love

The meaning of MIZUKAGAMI is the mirror of water. MIZUKAGAMI on this poem is the surface of the lake Biwako which is the biggest lake in Japan. The old name of area around of Biwako is Ohmi.
People love Ohmi-Hakkei, eight beautiful scenes of Ohmi.
Those are “Migratory birds of Katada”, “The moon in autumn of Ishiyama”, “The evening glow of Seta”, “The shower in night of Karasaki”, “Fair storm of Awazu”, “Evening temple bell of Mi-i”, “Sailboat coming back to Yabase”, “The evening snow of Hira”
The atmosphere of naive love of young Japanese girl is represented with the writing these names of Ohmi-hakkei into the poem.
The beginning of this poem it has been sang that the heart of young girl has been thrilled to the looking a man just for a second. Then in the atmosphere of Oumi-hakkei she has been fallen love for him. Her love has been raised up in the view of Oumi-hakkei.
And at the last she has been longing him to be going into one like a flow of water of river.

3) Jealousy

The matter of KANAWA is old story of Japan. Old time at first This story was made as Noh theater of an anonymous book. It takes almost one hour and played by only men. Then it was made as Kamigatamai played by women and it takes almost 15 minutes. KANAWA on Kamigatamai is the essence of the drama of KANAWA.

(The story)
A woman has been going to Usi-no-toki-mairi at Kifune Shrine of the mountain side every night.

Ushi no toki mairi or ushi no koku mairi ("ox-hour shrine-visit"))[2] refers to a prescribed method of laying a curse upon a target that is traditional to Japan, so-called because it is conducted during the hours of the Ox (between 1 and 3 AM)

She has been anxious for herself to be transformed into an Oni (a demon) to kill her husband who abandoned her and became a young woman.
Her husband has been feeling to be tortured into death by the bad energy of his wife’s curse. He has asked the shaman to help him.
The shaman has prayed to change a woman's curse upon a wish of a nightmare-stricken man and his young woman. And the shaman has put many labels of the Gods around of his bed to protect him from the woman's curse.
A woman who has changed into an Oni (a demon) has approached the side of the bed where her husband and young woman have been sleeping. And the Oni tried to kill her husband and his young woman.
But it has not be able to take the life of them who have been protected by the gods. The power of the curse has been lost. At last it has been disappeared with the rest of her vengeance.

3) Longing for enlightenment
JIUTA: “YUKI” (Snow)

Yuki is one of the most popular Kamigatamai (jiutamai). The text tells the story of a Buddhist nun who has lived in a nunnery, apart from the world, ever since she was disappointed in love while she was a young courtesan. The piece beautifully depicts the serenity of the mind of the woman, as the tolling of a temple bell in the snow reminds her of her past sorrows.
The instrumental interlude (ai-no-te) is used here to express the quiet tolling of a distant temple bell on a snowy evening. It has become so popular that its melancholy melody is often used in other dances as a kind of theme to suggest a snowy scene or to call forth a cold, dark atmosphere.
