Twelve days sharing life and work with
Eugenio Barba and Odin Teatret's actors
THE VERSATILITY OF THE SCORE
THE DRAMATURGY OF THE ACTOR AND THE DRAMATURGY OF THE DIRECTOR
Cohabitation 3 implies actively sharing Odin Teatret’s actors’ work milieu in their everyday individual and collective artistic as well as social tasks. The focus of Cohabitation 3 will be on the “versatility of the score”, intended as a theatrical structure resulting from the dramaturgy of the actor and the dramaturgy of the director.
Under the guidance of Odin actors, the participants will start from exercises as models for a score. Then they will create scenes and will blend their personal scores of physical, vocal and musical actions into a montage with a text.
The participants must bring with them two texts which are memorised: an extract of a dialogue from one of Shakespeare’s plays (half page) and a text chosen freely, poem or prose (half page). Moreover, they must know a song and, if they can play an instrument, a piece of music as well. It is important that the two texts, songs and music are known by heart.
A key aspect during Cohabitation 3 will be the practical analysis of the different levels of organisation in several Odin Teatret performances. After each performance, the actors and the director will point out the characteristics of their specific dramaturgy through demonstrations and the reconstruction of pivotal moments from the rehearsals.
The aim of Cohabitation 3 is to reflect practically, theoretically and sensorially on the different layers of a performance as a theatrical structure from the perspective of the dramaturgy of the actor and the dramaturgy of the director in relation to the perception of the spectators.
During Cohabitation 3, Odin Teatret will show the following performances: Inside the Skeleton of the Whale, The Deaf Man’s House, Ave Maria, Salt, Itsi Bitsi and Ode to Progress. The day after presenting the performances, Eugenio Barba and the actors will examine the different levels of the dramaturgical construction, so that the participants can distinguish the different layers, relationships and single elements that compose the whole.
Eugenio Barba and the actors will analyse each performance from the point of view of the actor, director, text, space, music, and the overall montage. The flowing continuity of the various interlaced elements that build the density and tensions of a performance will be examined in relation to simultaneity to emphasise the principles which make the different elements interact, blend and become potentially stimulating to the spectators’ perception.
Cohabitation 3 includes personal time for the participants to develop their own actor’s material; exchange with other participants; work demonstrations by Odin actors; films commented by Eugenio Barba; guided access to OTA (Odin Teatret Archives); and attending a rehearsal of Odin Teatret’s next production with the working title Ishi.
