A production by Odin Teatret (1997 - )

A film version of Odin Teatret‘s The Whispering Winds directed by Eugenio Barba. A performance-demonstration about the difference between theatre and dance.

The performative culture of European origin suffers from the division between theatre and dance, almost as though these were different realms of expression. They are, in fact, a single world which develops into distinct genres and yet is rooted in the experience of how to let the performer’s body-mind become scenically present.

Instead of ‘theatre’ and ‘dance’, we could say ‘deep dance’ and ‘evident dance’. ‘Deep dance’ is typical of the scenic forms which do not appear to be danced; ‘evident dance’ is sometimes disconnected from all mimetic or narrative criterion and materialises as pure physical dynamism.

All performance, however, is physically and mentally rooted in dance: a dance of energy and thought.
