Performers: Alice Occhiali, Valerio Peroni Director: Alice Occhiali

Voice over: Grandma Lillia, Aunt Francesca, Aunt Vilma Duration: 30 min. - Performed in Italian and English

The performative project Aliter Ubi comes from the need to rediscover a connection with one’s roots after years spent abroad, far from ‘home’. ‘Home’ is not thought as a determined physical place, but as a poetic space of daily rituals and a receptacle for sensations and memories. ‘Home’ can be a person, a perfume, an object, a song, a voice… Returning home is going back to the origin of who we are.

This first work in progress presents two characters suspended in a different world, Aliter Ubi. Voices accompany the journey of these two creatures who are animals, children, adults and old people at the same time. A starting point is an extract of The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard: “The central problem consists in asking whether, through the memories of all the houses in which we have found shelter, beyond all the houses in which we have dreamed of living, it is possible to identify an intimate and concrete essence that could be a justification of the singular value of all our images of protected intimacy.” Alice Occhiali writes that in her head Aliter Ubi looks like the Po valley, in the area of Ferrara where she was born and grew up: the vast fields, the canals, the Volano Po, covered by a slight fog and a thick blanket of frost on winter mornings. The distant voices of grandparents, peasants, artisans, partisans echo in this empty space, gently indicating the way back home.
