In this workshop participants will explore basic music-rhythm principles through our hands, feet and voices. These basic rhythmic principles help to understand rhythm from inside the body and feel comfortable with them. Participants will look at sharing the same rhythm, syncopation, polyrhythms and moving in-out of rhythmic patterns, holding a rhythm while there is a contrasting rhythm going on, creating rhythmic tensions and dynamics. Participants will work both with individual voices and the group.

Tap dancer Marije Nie (NL) is a musician and storyteller with her feet. She is fascinated by the power and the poetry of steps, and their ability to navigate many different worlds. Marije’s dancing transforms traditional tap-dance into a contemporary form; she builds bridges between different artistic disciplines, traditions and cultures. As part of her residency at NTL she co-founded the international artist driven research lab Cross Pollination, together with Adriana La Selva, which focuses on the dialogue in-between practices, new ways of knowledge building and understanding collaboration.  Marije Nie works with classical music, jazz, film and theatre, creates interdisciplinary theatre pieces, community art projects, interventions and workshops. She is part of Splendor, a musician collective in Amsterdam. Her multi-award winning dance documentary One Million Steps places dance as a catalyst in the public space in the midst of the Istanbul protests of 2013.
